Soft Underbelly : le nouveau solo d’Emily Gualtieri prend forme à travers les continents
On est ravi·e·s de partager un aperçu de Soft Underbelly, le nouveau solo de recherche mené par notre codirectrice artistique Emily Gualtieri. Le travail a débuté lors de sa résidence ATLAS à ImPulsTanz Vienne sous le mentorat d’Angélique Willkie, et s’est depuis déployé au fil de résidences et de collaborations internationales.
Un corps rarement centré sur scène
Soft Underbelly insiste sur la visibilité de corps féminins que la danse contemporaine a longtemps ignorés : des corps qui vieillissent, non idéalisés, et non entraînés pour la performance athlétique. S’inspirant de sa propre expérience en tant que femme aux courbes marquées et à la forte poitrine (bonnet 34H), Emily explore comment la « softness » perturbe et persiste au sein d’une forme artistique historiquement définie par le contrôle. Le travail suit les tensions entre effort et relâchement, exposition et dignité, pour revendiquer la présence comme force artistique en soi. Avec humour et franchise, elle propose un corps qui ne s’excuse plus – ni de son poids, ni de sa puissance, ni de sa douceur – tout en exposant les hiérarchies qui déterminent encore qui a le droit d’être vu en danse.
Recherche et échanges internationaux
En octobre, Emily s’est rendue à Zagreb, en Croatie, pour poursuivre le travail avec l’œil externe Koraljka Begović, rencontrée initialement à ImPulsTanz. Begović développait simultanément Traces, un solo explorant la résistance et les traumatismes transgénérationnels. Bien que les deux œuvres suivent des trajectoires distinctes, les développer en parallèle a ouvert une réflexion commune sur l’endurance et la contrainte. Leur résidence s’est conclue par une soirée conjointe de présentations en cours, créant un dialogue entre les artistes et un échange qui bouscule les conceptions établies du corps performatif.
Construire l’œuvre à travers les résidences
La création de Soft Underbelly s’appuie également sur des résidences au Toronto Dance Theatre et à La Otra Orilla à Montréal, avec une prochaine phase au CCOV où Emily et Koraljka se retrouveront. Elles poursuivront alors leur dialogue artistique, approfondissant l’échange international devenu central dans l’évolution du projet. Cette collaboration transfrontalière façonne les deux solos de manière puissante et inattendue.

Soft Underbelly: Emily Gualtieri’s New Solo Takes Shape Across Continents
We are thrilled to share a glimpse into Soft Underbelly, the new solo research led by our co-artistic director Emily Gualtieri. The work began during her ATLAS residency at ImPulsTanz Vienna under the mentorship of Angélique Willkie, and has since expanded across multiple residencies and international collaborations.
A body rarely centred on stage
Soft Underbelly insists on the visibility of female bodies that contemporary dance has historically overlooked: bodies that are aging, unidealised, and untrained for athletic display. Drawing from her own experience as a woman with curves and a large bust (size 34H), Emily investigates how softness disrupts and endures within a form long defined by control. The work traces the tension between effort and ease, exposure and dignity, reclaiming presence as an artistic force in itself. With humour and candour, she offers a body that refuses apology - for its weight, its strength, or its softness - while exposing the hierarchies that still shape who is allowed to be seen in dance.
International research and exchange
In October, Emily travelled to Zagreb, Croatia, to continue the work with external eye Koraljka Begović, whom she first met at ImPulsTanz. Begović was simultaneously developing Traces, a solo exploring resistance and transgenerational trauma. Though the two works follow distinct paths, developing them in parallel opened a shared inquiry into endurance and constraint. Their residency concluded with a joint evening of works-in-progress, creating a dialogue between the artists and an exchange that challenges established conceptions of the performing body.
Building the work across residencies
The creation of Soft Underbelly also draws on residencies at Toronto Dance Theatre and La Otra Orilla in Montréal, with an upcoming phase at CCOV, where Emily and Koraljka will reunite, continuing to inform each other’s solos and deepening the international exchange that has become central to the project’s evolution. This cross-border collaboration is shaping both works in powerful and unexpected ways.
